ANGER | STRESS | LOW CONFIDENCE/SELF ESTEEM | PESSIMISM | ANXIETY
|
Below are listed some feelings that can generate an unhealthy personality. Read on to see how they can affect your health and how to spot if you are a sufferer.
|
ANGER n a feeling of extreme annoyance or displeasure, often because of opposition, a hurt etc
|
Warning Signs
-My voice rises to extreme levels or I become aggressive when I disagree with someone
-I feel tension throughout my body when I have an argument
-I often feel guilty about my behaviour when I think back to the event
-After a row, I dwell on the issue for days
-I spend a lot of time thinking about revenge when someone has wronged me
Health Hazards
Anger has the potential to induce serious physical consequences. Some of the results of this emotion are:
- Blood pressure rises.
- Heart beat becomes more rapid
- Arteries narrow
- Platelets (the blood cells that form clots) can get sticky and begin to clump
- Crippling headaches and back problems
Studies by John Hopkins Medical School showed that angry young men and women could die earlier as a result of anger. It was found that those who become angry more quickly are three time more likely to develop coronary heart disease by the age of 55!

| STRESS n pressure; mental, emotional or physical strain or tension |
Warning Signs
-I find it difficult to relax at the end of the day
-My mind is churning all the time
-When I go on holiday I often come down with a minor illness
-I experience difficulty in falling asleep
-I seem to pick up a lot of colds and bugs
Health Hazards
Stress can be generated by a variety of things; family, work, a traffic jam! Stress is commonly seen as a negative emotion but sometimes, a little stress can be good for you! It can act as a motivator and keep driving you forward. However, if the pressure becomes too much, stress has the ability to have a disastrous effect on our health.
Stress generates adrenaline and cortisol, and over time these chemicals will eventually fur up your arteries and can also encourage a build up of fat which is strongly linked to heart attack and stroke.
Too much cortisol can also dampen down your immune system hindering your ability to fight off disease and decrease the number of cells in certain parts of the brain responsible for memory and learning. Some studies have even linked chronic stress and Alzheimer’s disease.

| LOW CONFIDENCE/SELF ESTEEM n reduced positive belief in one’s own abilities/attributes |
Warning Signs
-I shy away from the limelight
-I get tongue-tied particularly when I have something important to say
-I perspire excessively when faced with a challenge
-I blush in uncomfortable situations
-My voice breaks when I’m nervous
Health Hazards
Blushing, trembling, and a racing heart are some of the physical effects associated with low confidence/ self esteem and anxiety. Sufferers can experience a panic attack which feels like a heart attack. Additionally the-butterflies-in-stomach are part of the ‘fight or flight’ response to power muscles in preparation for running away from danger.
The body diverts blood away from your stomach, which helps to explain why anxiety is linked to bowel complaints like IBS. Shyness is also associated with alcoholism, as people with low confidence can often turn to drink to help them cope with nerves. Anxious people can also suffer from allergic-type symptoms like eczema and asthma, and studies have linked shyness to reduced immunity and a shorter lifespan.

| PESSIMISM n the tendency to expect the worst of all things, a negative outlook |
Warning Signs
-I find it easy to focus on the worst possible outcome
-When I look back at my life I notice the things that have gone wrong
-I project failure from my past onto future goals
-I believe success is for others
-I believe that I generally have bad luck
Health Hazards
The more pessimistic your outlook, the bleaker your health prospects become. Studies have shown that pessimists have a weaker immune system and are twice as likely to pick up infections. Pessimistic people’s T cells (the body’s first line defence against disease) don’t multiply as quickly, allowing bacteria and viruses to take hold.
A huge personality study in America concluded that pessimists are four times more likely to suffer a heart attack. And optimists live, on average, 19% longer than pessimists due to the stress and the physical problems that are generated by a having negative outlook!

| ANXIETY n the condition of being anxious; eagerness, concern; a cause of worry |
We all experience anxiety when we feel stressed and overwhelmed by things that we have to deal with in life. Often mild anxiety can help to motivate us to do things or perform better but at a severe level it can have a paralysing effect, preventing us from doing things and generally spoiling our lives.
There are many stressful life events, changes and personal crisis that make any of us feel anxious, for example:
- leaving home
- coping with work, auditions, exams and their demands
- problems with personal/sexual relationships
- loneliness
- financial problems
- bereavement and other losses.
In addition, some of us might feel particularly affected by some special situations for example:
- fears about going into new/social situations
- worries about asserting ourselves, dealing with people in authority
- fears about our health or general safety
- fears about making a big decision
What does anxiety feels like?
Anxiety can be experienced as a range of feelings from uneasiness to severe panic. It is usually experienced in three ways:
Emotionally: with feelings of fear and nervousness
Physically: dry mouth, feeling sick or a churning stomach, heart beating faster than usual, sweating shaking, wanting to go the toilet all the time, difficulty breathing, unable to work or sleep
Cognitively: frightening thoughts, such as “I’m going to fail / making a fool of myself / losing control / I’m going mad” etc...
At worst, anxiety and the fear of panic attacks can affect our life and behaviour in all kinds of ways: we may find ourselves avoiding people or places, or trying to cope by drinking or smoking too much.
